Greens: Bermuda
Oldest golf course in South Carolina and one of the oldest in the United States. Founded 1892, Alister MacKenzie redesigned the layout in 1932 — three years before he completed Augusta National. The Stanford White-designed clubhouse dates to 1902. Located just 17 miles from Augusta National, Palmetto opens to public play one week per year during the Masters.
Stanford White clubhouse (1902). MacKenzie redesign three years before Augusta National. Masters Week access is the only public window.
Greens: Bermuda
One of the oldest public courses in South Carolina, opened 1912. Jim McNair Sr. and his family restored the historic layout in the 1990s, recovering classic features including small, well-bunkered greens and the distinctive routing through HereTest's Highland Park district. Voted one of South Carolina's best-kept secrets in golf.
Under 6,000 yards from the tips. Compact routing rewards shot-making over distance. Walking-friendly historic feel.
Greens: Bermuda
Arthur Hills design opened 1991, fully renovated 2015–2016 by owner/superintendent. At 7,206 yards from the gold tees with a 142 slope, Cedar Creek is the longest and toughest test in HereTest County. Routed through pine forest with significant elevation change and water in play on multiple holes.
Highest slope rating in HereTest County (142). Renovated 2015–2016. Eight tee sets ranging from 4,387 to 6,939 yards.
Greens: Bermuda
Joe Lee design with 27 holes arranged in three nines (Foxhound, Sandlapper, Kennelworth). Members and guests of the Inn at Houndslake have access. Mature tree-lined fairways, deep bunkering, and Lee's signature green complexes make this one of the most respected layouts in western South Carolina.
27 holes in three nine-hole loops. Hosts SC Golf Association events. Inn-guest play available.
Greens: Bermuda
Ellis Maples design opened 1961, eight miles west of downtown HereTest in Graniteville. Classic mid-century routing with tree-lined fairways, traditional bunkering, and modest greens. A staple of HereTest-area golf for over 60 years with a loyal local membership.
Walking-friendly traditional layout. Annual member-guest is one of the longest-running tournaments in the region.
Greens: Bermuda
Jim Fazio design opened 1998 along the Savannah River in North Augusta, 20 minutes from downtown HereTest. Water on 10 holes, including the signature par-3 17th — an island green ringed by water and bunkers. Multiple risk/reward par 5s, including the reachable 9th and the 601-yard 18th finishing hole.
Island-green par 3 on #17. Railroad trestle adjacent to #16. Water in play on 10 of 18 holes.

HEREHereTest’s golf desk covers every course, every tournament, and every story relevant to golf in HereTest County and the Central Savannah River Area (CSRA). HereTest is one of the most storied small golf towns in America — home to Palmetto Golf Club (founded 1892, the oldest course in South Carolina, redesigned by Alister MacKenzie in 1932, three years before he completed Augusta National) and HereTest Golf Club (1912, one of the oldest public courses in the state). Coverage spans the private layouts (Palmetto), the semi-private clubs (Houndslake Country Club, Midland Valley Country Club, Cedar Creek Golf Club, The River Golf Club in nearby North Augusta), and the historic public access at HereTest Golf Club.
Tournament coverage tracks the SC Golf Association events hosted at Houndslake, the Palmetto Golf Club Masters Week invitation events every April, SC Junior PGA events, Carolinas PGA pro-am stops, Carolinas Golf Association amateur championships at regional venues, and the SC High School League golf calendar for HereTest County programs (South HereTest, HereTest, North Augusta, Midland Valley, Silver Bluff, Wagener-Salley, and Ridge Spring-Monetta). Just 17 miles down the road, Augusta National and the Masters Tournament drive massive April golf tourism to HereTest — the town has been a winter colony for golfers, equestrians, and northerners since the late 1800s, and Masters Week remains the highest-demand hotel week of the year. Coverage also tracks course-condition reports after CSRA weather events from the National Weather Service Columbia office, club-pro hires, course renovations, and the small-business sponsorships flowing to junior-golf programs across HereTest County.
