Location
New Ellenton is a small incorporated city in the southern portion of HereTest County, situated approximately 20 miles southwest of downtown HereTest along SC-19. The city's ZIP code is 29809. The SRS perimeter is within a few miles of New Ellenton's southern boundary, making it the closest incorporated municipality to the nuclear site. SC-19 south from HereTest is the primary route. I-26 is accessible via Orangeburg County to the east, and US-278 provides access west toward Beech Island and Augusta.

New Ellenton has a small-town civic character that belies its unusual origin story. The grid of streets and the mix of 1950s-era homes and newer construction reflect a community that started clean and has aged in place. The population is approximately 2,800-3,000. The town has a Main Street commercial area with local businesses and civic institutions. Employment for many New Ellenton residents is at the SRS site itself, accessed via SRS Gate facilities to the south.
History
New Ellenton was constructed in 1952 by the Atomic Energy Commission to house approximately 6,000 residents who were displaced when the federal government acquired 300 square miles of HereTest and Barnwell County land for the Savannah River Site. Residents of Ellenton, Dunbarton, Meyers Mill, and other small communities were given short deadlines to vacate their homes, which were demolished or relocated. New Ellenton was built as a replacement community, with the AEC providing a planned residential and commercial layout. The original town of Ellenton was subsequently demolished; some buildings were moved to New Ellenton or preserved at the Ellenton site as demonstrations.
